Thanks for that Suzy, I'm still looking for my gt gt grandfather James Charles Buddell on the 1871 census. He would have been about 12, born either Islington or St pancras, depending on other census'. Think I have found his father, James, in 1871 in Crofton House, Titchfield, Hants, but the surname is Buddle and no family, but the occupation is correct. In 1861, my James (but was known as Charles), was 2, a visitor at 4 Canal Terrace, Kentish Town, then I loose him until 1881 when he has got married. Any help with him would be brill. Kim

It's not absolutely straightforward (or I haven't found it so) but... If you've found them somewhere else in a census, you have all the basic reference info to get the right area. You might have to put in a first name (can't recall exactly), but you start by selecting the census you want (i.e. which year) then choose a county then choose the place (that's when other censuses' info becomes valuable - you know which sub-area you're looking for.) then you may have to choose between several individual bits - they usually have a description page for you to look at first - all being well it will list the streets. If it doesn't, then that's when the slog begins. I keep to the 50% image while I'm searching for an address because the images load faster. Once you've found the page, part the image shows the piece number (e.g. RG12/1746) the folio (not noted on every page - you may have to scroll one or two to find it) and page number (which really is the page number). You can enter that lot to see how the names have actually been transcribed! Christine

You can search the 1881 on Ancestry by address (using the 'Residence' fields) but not the rest. But if you are looking for a village you can easily find it using the 'browse' facility at the bottom of the search for each census. Not so useful for cities but if you don't mind ploughing through a lot of pages you can find out which enumeration district a street was in by reading all the descriptions of enumeration districts until you get to the right one. Then look through all the pages of that enumeration district. Unfortunately all that can take a long time! Kate.

Hello Kim As far as I know, the census which are online, particularly Ancestry, can only be searched by name (the exception to this is the 1861 on 1837online) I think you can search manually by address if you are looking at the census on disc ie at a records office. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. Anyone in particular you are looking for? Suzy

Can anyone tell me please. Can you do an address search on the Ancestry Census? If you can can, could you please explain it in simple terms as I can't find anyway of doing it. Thanks Kim
