..... Annie Ellen Stephens. I have her marriage cert. dated 1913 stating she was 19 which makes her date of birth c1894. She married in Brighton and her father was Samuel Stephens and he was a publican. Can't find either of them on any census. This lot are more tricky to find than any of my others put together. Can anyone help please? Linda

I found a Samuel Stephens age 43 in Brighton but his occupation is a house painter, however occupations easily change. His wife is Rose, 42, with daughters Edith (hotel waitress), 19, Florence 10, & Nellie, 7, all born Brighton. So I checked FreeBMD and there are: Births Sep 1883 STEPHENS Edith Rose Brighton 2b 222 Births Sep 1891 STEPHENS Florence Ruby Brighton 2b 211 and two possible options for Nellie Births Mar 1894 Stephens Ellen Louise Brighton 2b 227 Births Sep 1894 Stephens Annie Helena Brighton 2b 210 but unfortunately Ellen Louise dies aged 1 in Dec 1895. Linda have a look in http://www.historicaldirectories.org choose Find by Location - Sussex choose (e.g.) Kelly's 1911 (remember that names can be listed with surname first) There's a Stephens, Samuel, beer retlr, Alhambra Theatre (stage door), and he's on a Brighton & Hove page. also listed as a beer retailer, 55 Russell Street If you're creative, you may find more possible references. Christine PS - any chance you could track down a Baptism record first to see if it's the right one? Photo-copies of those come at 20-40p each (plus postage, if you aren't near the relevant library with the fiches) instead of £7. Or see whether Susses FHS can help?

Name: Leonard, Rose Record Type: Marriages Quarter: June Year: 1880 District: Brighton County: Sussex East Sussex Volume: 2b Page: 361 must be the Mum Christine Looking again at Linda's, I realise that I misread the Mum's name as another fella with the first name 'Leonard' and the surname 'Rose'! Oops!

I used Linda's info to look at the 1901 image. I reckon he's a House Painter. If you need the info - they're at 5 Kensington Street. Christine
