For a few weeks now, have been looking at all your tips and following them as best I can – and had some very encouraging successes. So, my thanks to you more experienced hands for all your help. Could I possibly ask sks who is a whizz with the census to advise me on 1871 lost family, please, if you have a moment to spare. Have tried just Christian name with dob and some alternatives for mistranscriptions. Would be immensely grateful for any pointers/assistance. [Charles Edward Bell born January 1870, 25 Commercial St, Rotherhithe. Family has moved from that address by 1871. Father Edward, born 1844 Newcastle upon Tyne, journeyman cooper, and mother Anne, born about 1846.] All best, Carol |

Hi, both, Thanks for your interest. Son Ernest not born til 1873, I'm afraid. In 1881, mistranscribed as Bill in Gillingham, Kent. And, Edward wasn't born in Gateshead; Charles wasn't born in Limehouse! Cheers, Carol |

Dear Jess, Yes, that's the one - it took a long time to find! The clincher is Ernest dob and place of birth, which is right, and Edward being a cooper. Regards, Carol |

Dear Jess, Thanks so much for trying - I've gone round and round. If you can't find them, they must have slipped through the enumerator's fingers. Sincerely Carol |

Ernest age 17 b ?, Kent , General Labourer Edward and Ann E on 1901 Living at 158 Charles Street, Mile End Old Town, London. Edward has only aged 2 years since 1891 and Ann has stayed the same age! Hi, Victor, Thanks for that. Considering how many facts were wrong in the 1881, I'll certainly keep the details of this family to hand. Cheers, Carol |

Dear Sue, Thank you for being willing to help. I think 17 yr old Ernest must have told the enumerator his parents' ages in 1891 - the ones in 1901 are a bit more accurate. Charles, wife Sarah, and his four children are sharing the house in Charles Street in 1901. Ernest had by then married Sarah's sister and was living not far away. Best regards, Carol |
