Thanks Elderly That's 'cheap as chips' as they say :) I managed to get back on the National Archivist site last night and couldn't believe my luck. I had 34 credits I had forgotten all about. They should have expired on the 28th May but were still working and I found a will reference for my 3rd Great-Grandfather who died in 1885. He wasn't listed last time I looked. Good job I checked yesterday because they obviously updated their records today and the last 10 credits I had at the end of last night have now vanished. Luckily I had found everything I need for now. How's that for timing. Now I have another will to order. Thanks again for your help Kate

Sorry, Kate. I crashed out last night. It's £5 to cover BOTH items.

Thanks Elderly The National Archivist is where I got the original ref from about the DDR’s but it won’t let me log on today, think they must be having problems with the site. I thought I had to pay £5 for the will from York and another £5 for the Grant. Is it just one £5 charge for both? Thanks for your help Kate

By the way, I think that the National Archivist (not TNA) website has the indexes online. I'm not sure whether you have access to the images as well. I have to say that the process of looking things up in the DDR is pretty tortuous as you have to look through (from memory) TWO indexes before you get to the actual records.

The advice they give at the Principal Probate Registry is always to ask for the grant of probate as well as the will as it does not cost you anything more and you will get a smidgeon more information - from memory, who the probate was granted to. The death duty registers are entirely different. Tax was paid on estates over a certain value. The rate of tax depended on whether you were kin or unrelated in blood. So all the beneficiaries are listed, together with their relationship to the testator. Ideally, you want to look at both, since they provide different types of information.

Please could someone clarify for me if the information contained within the Death Duty Register and a Grant of Probate is different. Also if there is a will is there always a Grant of Probate? I was in the process of writing to York for copies of two wills and the Grants of Probate for these and I've been doing a bit of digging to try and find out the correct process as I haven't ordered wills before. Whilst doing this I found a Death Duty Register Index for one of the above rellies. I've worked out that to view the DDR record I need to visit Kew (unless anyone else knows different) So, is it worth the journey from Nottingham or should I just stick to the documents I can get by post. All advice warmly received :) Kate
