Jess - this is Mary's baptism from the IGI, but it's her sister Elizabeth (E. Bristow on the 1871) who was my ancestor (Mary's mother Mary married James Ferrier after John Besant's death and Elizabeth came from this second marriage, she married John Bristow but they were living apart by 1871): MARY BESANT Female Event(s): Birth: 08 JAN 1805 Christening: 15 JAN 1805 Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, England Parents: Father: JOHN BESANT Family Mother: MARY Kate.

T. C. - yes, I have her on all censuses from 1851 to 1901 but she wasn't running a shop on any other, nor was her sister. When she had an occupation it was embroiderer (1881), needlework (1891). Mary has no occupation on the 1861 and I haven't found her (Mary) on the 1881 but I doubt if she would still have been working by then anyway (she died of 'senile decay' in 1884). Kate.

Hi Kate, the first word looks like either Master or Washer to me? The second, not sure at all. Thought it may be the first part of Baker at first, but why would it be crossed out? Have you got her on the previous census? Or her sister?

Thanks everybody who tried. Maybe if and when Historical Directories get some London directories for the 1870's all will be revealed... Kate.

Yes, Jess, I was one of those who replied to your monger thread. That was what reminded me about the unidentified shop! I'm not really expecting anybody to figure it out because I've been puzzling over it for months, but just thought I'd give it a try. Kate.

I don't know whether anybody will be able to read this one, but it has been puzzling me for a long time. My great-great-grandmother and her sister were running a shop in 1871 - but what kind of shop was it? RG10 piece 205 folio 65 page 41 (1871 census of England - London St. Pancras - Regent) 'May Besant' (really Mary) and E. Bristow. Any ideas? Kate.
