Sarah, His second marriage as a widower in 1873 gave his father as William Day (deceased). Occupations weren't given. His first marriage, or at least the one I think was his first marriage had details in an e-mail that I bloomin' well can't find at the moment. That will teach me not to organise my paperwork! Alan, Thank you for what you have found. However, I don't think this is the right family, although they may well be related of course. My Charles enlisted into the army on 29th January 1861. This Charles has an occupation of scholar, and since I think the census was taken in April, and I can't see any reason to lie about occupation, I don't think they are a match. But then again, who knows! Thanks everyone for your help. Sharon |

Sarah, yes he married twice! Both times out in India and both marriage records give a different name for his father. He is just so helpful to me! :-) |

Thanks Roy. What a great site. Looks like he would have been at the headquarters in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. |

Hi Sarah. Well that's the thing. I mean it could be him, but without knowing his parents names I can't tell! But all other censuses and his death certificate indicate that he was born later in 1845. Sharon |

Sharon, I have the same problem. One of my rellies was born in 1859. I have him on the 1861 but then he doesn't appear again until 1884 when he married! I can find all the rest of his family (all happily living together minus their youngest son) but can't find Henry. Given that he would only be about 12 in 1871, I have no idea where he could be. One possibility is that he was in hospital - a long shot I know to be in hospital for over 10 years but a lot of hospitals/institutions only recorded the initials of the patients, not the full name, so finding them would be impossible. So, although I can't help, just wanted to let you know that you are not in the same boat and there is always the slight possibility he was in hospital! Sam x |

No!!!!! They can't do this to me. The indexes for his birth certificates are illegible as it is. I'm never going to get past my great grandfather on this line at this rate. :-( |

OK you brilliant lot, here's my next problem. Charles Day, born about 1845 in Westminster, joined the army in January 1961 at Westminster. His army service record shows he wasn't abroad in 1861, so why oh why can I not find him on the 1861 census (Ancestry)? Sharon |
