Hi. What was the legal age for marriage without consent in 1922? Was it 21? If someone married before the age of 21 and required parental consent, in what format did the parent have to consent? Was there a form to fill in or was it just a case of declaring their consent to the vicar? Thank you! |

Thanks for the reply Kay. I wonder if they still had to sign their consent in the 'old days'? |

It was not unheard of for couples to be economic with the truth and just lie. One of my sets of greatgrandparents both lied when they got married, they both said they were 21 on their marrige certificat in 1922, but they were 19 and born in 1903. I beleive that one of the witnesses was related to the bride and would have known that the girl was lieing. |

Until the Age of Marriage Act in 1929, boys could marry at 14 and girls at 12 with parental consent, from 1929 the minimum age was raised to 16 for both sexes. |

Thanks for all your replies! My great-grandad definitely got consent from his father (my grandad remembers the stories about how they were quite young when they married and so had to get permission). The marriage certificate states he was 19 when they married in 1922. So at least they followed protocol! Thanks! Jane |

My beloved was under 21 when we wed in 1963. Her father signed a form of consent which we gave to the registrar when arranging the marriage. We had to consult the registrar as we married in a Methodist Church. I remember being told that if her parents refused permission we could have made an application for permission to the local Magistrates Court. dave |
