I have got as far back in my family tree as I am able with provable information. In 1846 my GG Granfather got married and his Dad was at his wedding. The Dad was John Thomas Munro and I have looked everywhere for proof of him. I have found a birth record in the GUildhall Library of a John Thomas Munro with a father Hugh and a mother ELizabeth but I have no means of verifying if it is really him. There is no record of a marriage between Hugh and ELizabeth even. The family seemed to have lived in the CLerkenwell area but must originally have come from Scotland. On the son's marriage certificate it says that the wife of JT was Sarah and Ihave seen the birth of the son at the Metropolitan London Archive that confirms this. Ther are several marriages of a John Munro to a Sarah so I don't know which one may be right. I know he was an organ builder in the Minories- endentured but I can't find any records of them and even if I found that it wouldn't tell me who his parents were so I could go that next step back , would it? What do you do at this point? Give up or is there something else I haven't thought of? I have tried going to CLerkenwell for the 1841 census and have checked the rate books there. I have searched IGI and Ancestry.com exhaustively. I have read all the family websites about the Munro's but still JT remains a mystery. I feel sure I am missing something. |

Have you tried variations of the surname? |

I dont know about giving the parents names on the indentures, but most apprentices tended to follow the family businesses and it could be that his 'master' may be his father or another family relative. Also, not sure about this particular trade, but on the watermens indentures you often get their date of birth. |

My GG Grandfather was RObert Hugh Munro, his wife was Hephzibah Higgins. I have had no trouble tracing her family back to Birmingham as far as I like but the MUnros stop with JOhn Thomas who attended Robert's wedding in 1846. I have the marriage certificate and this and the birth record are the only ways I know his name. |

I have tried variations - I always tick the box that allows them. |

Perhaps I'll try to find records of the indentures - anyone know where to find them? |

The JT at the wedding was the father for sure. His name is in a column headed 'father's name and surname'. I have found one death certificate but when it came I doubted that it was my JT because he died in Kent and was not an organ builder. How frustrating is this? WHy do we do it to ourselves? As far as the Scottish thing is concerned - I have been to Inverness and sat with the genealogist in the library there to no avail. There is a mystery surrounding JT and it has somethig to do with the title of Baronet and Baron. I am guessing but I think the last baronet in the Culcairn line had a child by a marriage that he didn't want to acknowledge for some reason. I think this was my JT and there has been an effort to hide him. Who knows now? |

Hi SUe - very true! He may have been deceased as he was not a signatory. The wife's father and mother were signatories so you are probably very right. Hadn't thought of that. AGain I ask the question - why do we do this to ourselves? AAAAArrrgh! |
