Pam, for that period of years, your best bet is familyrelatives.org It is brilliant for the period 1866-1920. You can enter his name, place if you know it and as much of a years span as you want and it will bring up every match for you. |

HI Carol. Could you tell me where I could find the death of a g/father who is reported to have taken his wife to war with him. He was injured and returned to England where he had his leg amputated in Gosport Hospital A short while later his son was born(1830)Joseph). Shortly after or befor the birth he is reported to have died. His name was George Bartlett and on Josephs marriage cert. he does not have a Occ. shown which I presume means he is dead. Joseph was born in Hay Green Worcester or sometimes shown as A Green.. Can you suggest where I could find a death cert or date for George. I dont think Worcester is very near Gosport which is in Hampshire I think. He could have died in either places Any suggestions would be appreciated |

Mary, can you give us a name, rough year and area you are looking for. Some counties have extensive free parish record indexes, other not at all. |

Chris Thanks for the reply, Does anyone other than the county hold parish records or do you have to go to the Parish or County Office itself. Its a bit far from Sydney. Regards Mary |

Pam Have you got your grandfather's marriage certificate? This should give his age unless he was over 21 and it may say 'of full age'. Lyn |

The cheapest way to find a birth, marriage or death when you haven't really got the year narrowed down, is to go to a large library, or an LDS Family History Centre and look through the St. Catherine's Index which is usually on microfische, for free. At least that is complete, and it doesn't matter how many years you look through - all it will cost you is time. Kath. x |

Pam I am sure that we all have stories like that - most of us have spent time if not money doing a search when we could have found out what we wanted a quicker/cheaper way. I'm sure we've all bought the wrong certs etc too. I've cetainly spent ages looking on websites and then found that the area or period I wanted wasn't covered. I just look on it as experience and feel justified in considering myself a proper researcher now! nell |

When you go to Freebmd on opening page check Information and then sree the likelyhood of your event being on their register - they have charts of births marriages and deaths year by year. After that go to 1837online for 1911/12 onwards - personally even if I find an event on Freebmd I like to check the accuracy by seeing it on 1837 - had two occasions when it had been incorrectly transcribed. |

Thanks Helen, I'll give that a go. I suppose it should have occurred to me that searching such a wide range of years was going to cost money. Doh! Oh well, at least I'll know better next time. |

Yes and its free - Freebmd. Google to find it. It's not complete yet, but if what you want is before 1910 there's a good chance its there. Never, ever pay for anything when you have only a vague idea. Always try to narrow it down to just a year or so before using payable searches. Have you found him on the 1901 census index - that will give you his age to within a year. nell |

Bought my first fivers worth of units for 1837 today, and wasted most of them! Was trying to find a record of my grandfather's birth, but as I only have the vaguest idea of the date (anywhere between 1897 and 1910) I had to view loads of pages. And still didn't find what I was looking for. Is there an easier way? Pam |
