Hi everyone, I have recently found out that for the past six years I have been tracing the wrong ancestor. It was very annoying! Havig found my ancestor on the 1851 and 1861, I now know that he was born in Arundel, Sussex. The IGI has the baptism (even though it is 2 years out for the estimated age on the censuses - but I have looked at the parish records and it's the only one).... 1. GEORGE LOCK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 20 SEP 1797 Arundel, Sussex, England Parents: David & Frances Lock George gives his year of birth on both censuses as 1799. I can only hope that this is my ancestor. I looked in Arundel and could not find a marriage for his parents. I think that they moved away after 1799 (also had the following children in Arundel): 2. THOMAS LOCK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 19 DEC 1795 Arundel, Sussex, England 3. FRANCES LOCK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 22 JAN 1799 Arundel, Sussex, England It is possible that they moved to Winterborne Abbas. The IGI also lists these two children born to a couple David & Frances - 5. DAVID <LOCK> - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 19 APR 1806 Winterborne Abbas, Dorset, England 6. FRANCES <LOCK> - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 19 APR 1806 Winterborne Abbas, Dorset, England BUT I don't know if this is the right couple. George married Ann Toby 3 Jun 1824 at Melcombe Regis, Dorset. They had left Dorset before 1851, possibly around 1840. I am trying to find the marriage of George's parents, David and Frances. I am guessing that it is in Sussex. The only marriage that the index has, and the IGI is one in Rogate in 1815, but I have looked at this record and both needed consent from their parents, suggesting that they were under 21. This is not my couple then. IS anyone able to create miracles, or suggest what to do next? I really want to get further back with George. Please help!! |

Hi Chloe I know you have posted about this family before, and cannot remember if I've asked this question before: Have you seen the Rogate registers? Occasionally you discover that EVERY marriage is with consent of parents, including widows and widowers. This is because the clerk is too lazy to cross the sentence out. It would be worth looking at the register carefully, to make sure this isn't the case. |

Thanks Brenda. Yes, I have posted this once before. But I don't think I had even looked at the registers then. I looked at them a couple of months ago in Chichester. The consent section was actually written in, 'both parents' or something along those lines. The on ybit that was typed was the 'with the consent of', which holds it in better steed that they were actually under 21 and not the people I am looking for. Does this make sense? |

Try Googling Sussex FHS. I know they have a marriage index which should cover your period. Their website should tell you more about it. |

Is that the incomplete index? I looked at that when I was in Chichester. Only David and Frances on there was the one in Rogate! Will have a look anyway. Thanks, Brenda. |

Just clarifying where I have looked - IGI Sussex Marriage Index Arundel Parish Records FamilyHistoryOnline Please please please can someone help/advise? Brenda has made some good sugestions, but I have already covered these bases (just didn't make it completely clear in my first message). Please! I help so many people on these boards and never seem to get as much help when I need it!! I do not mean to sound ungrateful, just desperate! Chloe |

The next suggestions are the marriage indexes for Hampshire (Hampshire GS) and Dorset (Somerset & Dorset FHS). But I must admit that I'm struggling for suggestions. I personally think that Sussex is a Bermuda Triangle for ancestors. My Sussex roots laugh and jeer at me, knowing that I will never identify MY Thomas Peirce from the ten or so possible candidates. |
