Hi Daphne!! Have you tried looking for Sarah and her Mum on 1841 census? Also, if you give a town/county perhaps we could have a look for you. Regards Kim |

Found a birth of a Sarah Anne Rose, 1820, Cranworth, Norfolk. Parents James Rose and Mary Norton. Could it be possible that the James Knoll chap was a witness to the marriage? Sometimes, the names were filled in in the wrong persons place. Just an idea!! Also found birth of a Sarah Anne Rose 1820, Cranworth - Parents Henry Rose and Susannah Tilney. |

It could be that her Maiden Name was KNOLL and that she had married a ROSE and now marrying again - she would use her married name and father would show her birth name. |

Was going to say the same as Joe. My grt gran remarried & on the cert she is married in her previous married name, not her maiden name.but of course her father 's surname is her maiden name Hope that makes sense. She married for the third time! In her second married name ,with no ref to the surname of the first husband, dads name of course confirmed had the right certs when I got them. Hasten to add ,she was widowed twice before marrying the third hubby. Shirley |

Did James KNOLL sign as a witness, ie was he still alive in 1846? If so, can you find him in 1851 and see if he is with anyone likely to be Sarah's mother? |

Thank you all for the help. And no James was not a witess .It says Sarah was a spinster. The witess were a Henry Brafsnett and a Harriet Smith. Both fathers Richard Juby and James Knoll down as Labourers. Will see if I can find any of them in the 1841 census. But some in Southburgh are not on the CD I have. Daphne |

Daphne, This really doesn't seem quite to add up, does it! If the Sarah ROSE born in Cranworth to James & Mary ROSE is indeed your lady, I reckon the vicar just wrote the name down wrongly on the marriage register. It could be that there was also a James KNOLL who reminded the poor cleric of Sarah's father, James ROSE?! After all, it is unlikely the bride & groom would have been able to read - well, if your Norfolk ancestors were of similar standing to my ag labs! Otherwise, perhaps we should be looking for a James KNOLL marrying a Miss ROSE? Regs Jane |
