Hello All, This branch of my family have been particularly difficult to research due to the constant misspelling of their surname!!!! I have seen, Slinn, Slim, Slimm, Slym, Slyn, Slyme, Shun..... Being well aware of this transribbing problem, I have been able to find my Slynns using all known variations, however the 1861 census on Ancestry has me stumped!!!! No sign of them anywhere!!!!! They are: George (1814, Birmingham Warwickshire) & Sarah Slynn, Francis George Slynn (1837, Birmingham Warwickshire) & Emma (1839), also daughter Emma b1860. They have always lived in Birmingham to my knowledge. Any ideas???? Thanks, Gillian

have you tried christian names and birthplaces and playing spot the surname?

Hi Jess, Yes, I've entered first names only with dobs and place of birth but with no luck!!! Have tried this for all of them: George, Sarah, Francis, Emma elder & Emma younger. I looked at all the surnames beginning with S & F. Gillian

Found a George Slynn age 24yrs born Blymhill,Staffs with brother Henry 19yrs, head of household. 1861 census rg9/1853

Hi Heather, Yes there is a Staffordshire SLYNN family, as yet I have found no link to my Birmingham lot. George's father is also called George, not Henry. Thanks for looking. Gillian

Just a thought, have your tried Lynn? S and L look very much the same in old writing and dont forget the original enumerators stuff was copied again back at the office.

When this happened to me I was told to try every possible combination .........so I went thru the alphabet........starting with the first letter.........by K I had found them (should have been R)....... So I would suggest you try Bynn, Cynn, Dynn, Fynn, working your way through each letter ..........It might be Kynn, .........Rynn.........Tynn......anything in fact. My Knott family were listed under Howatt.....!!! It's a lot of work .........but worth it just to find them! Good luck!

FOUND ONE FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would you believe it. The mother of of transcription errors!! Slynn was Slim George instead of Francis George Worcestershire instead of Warwickshire Emma's age 7 years instead of 7 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All that together, no wonder I had difficulties! Just shows you need to keep looking! Gillian
