in the 1881 Census my ancestor is described as a 'Fly man'. Can anyone enlighten me as to what his job description is?

Was he working for a theatre? My Great Grandfather was a theatrical fly-man. Sheila

Thanks for that Dea, I think that this is the most probable description and it ties in with general family vocations. Unfortunately I cannot find the family on 1891 census to off set his job.

I'm not aware of any theatricals in our family, we were more ag. labs, stableman type.

Dea - another question - do you know what the 'flys' were used for? Would it be for people carryying or a commercial use? Cheers Sandra x

Sandra I think they were often for transporting passengers, - a sort of horse-drawn taxi.
