Hi all, I would like a bit of advice or tips please on how best to put my Census findings in better order. I have so much more Census info on my rellies now that I am finding it a pain to keep track of who's who and where etc. Is it best to file them all in the Census years; under g. grandparents etc.; under family names; or what? Because most families intertwine I don't know whether to put them under Martha or Arther, so to speak. Help!! :-/ One thing I have done is seperated them as, Mum's side & Dad's side. Margaret |

I tend to file things by desription and then date so I have sepreate files for each census, Births, marriages and deaths e.g 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 Births Marriages Deaths Newspapers Army Infomation Forms (fild in by living relatives) Spliting every thing in to maternal and paternal lines is also go as you have a rough idea of how your related. Generally what ever system you find works is the right one for you. |

Hi Lunar, I have my BMDs split and in date order which works well. I also have a file of rellies 'life history's', Mum's & Dad's side then in generations. So, (thinking out loud) If I have Census in date order, Mum & Dad side, then ? that's it I guess! ok i'll see how I get on with that. Thanks, :-) Margaret |

Hi Margaret, I Keep each Census in its own file, with its description i.e Will Smith snr.1871 RG10, also Will. Smith Jnr. 1871 RG10 and any other Smiths. They go into a Main file Named Smith Census'. I do the same with the other years and they ALL go in the Smith file . I do the same with all other family members Browns, Jones etc. all have their own files (and all the females will be entered under their maiden names.) you can Keep them anywhere, but on the Desktpop they are visible. I have a folder for each census year. Files are named with surname first so they are easier to find from an alphabetical list EverittJas81.jpg EverittJn81.jpg EverittJos81.jpg |

I have a folder for each family name and put the relevant info - birth certs, death certs, censuses and any other information in a particular order in each folder. If the census covers 2 families I put a copy in each file, and therefore put a copy of the marriage certificate in bride & grooms file. Then I have a box file (or 3) for the stuff I haven't filed!!!! maggie |

Thanks folks! Well I have spent all evening putting together an arch file. I have split it first into Mum & Dad sides, with two devider sets both with Census dates from 1841 etc. I then put a reference no. on the info that is of the same family. I will also put them in alphabetical order as someone said. Blimey, if I was to get paid for the hours I spend on all this I would be rich! Margaret, off to bed now I think :-) |
