Hello, On an 1881 Canadian Census the words used to describe an ancestor's occupation and religion are as follows: Kenerud (occupation) Bobster (religion) Does anyone know what these mean? I've checked everywhere on the internet for any information on these, but can't find what they are. I was hoping someone could put some light on the matter! Thanks! Jill |

Gillian I think whoever filled in the form has made those names up! Have you seen the original images and is that what they really look like? nell |

Hi, I think it would be best to nudge this thread a bit later when someone from the States or Canada will be on. :o) If your not around I'll nudge it for you, if I see anyone from either place. AL |

Thanks Nell and Al! I actually live in Canada (emigrated from England) and never have heard from the terms before, so I'm a bit baffooned!!! I do know that he was a Preacher (Baptist), as described in the 1901 Census, Ontario, Canada Census, but unfortunately, I can't get my hands on the handwritten original transcript as I don't think the 1881 Canada Census is available on line. I got the 1881 details from the Latter Day Saints site. I think Bobster is a religious term, but I don't know for sure. I checked on the Old Occupations lists available for Kenerud, but it doesn't list such a 'profession'. Oh well, I'll just wait and see if someone out there knows! Thank you both for replying! OK, now I may be completely barking here, but if the Canadian Census is anything like the 1881 British Census, here is my suggestion: Bobster - if you had a mouth full of teeth and the enumerator was a bit deaf,( and also had twiddly writing,) Baptist could sound like Bobster. Kerenuk - apply similar rule - could be Cleric, as in Baptist Minister. OK, a bit far-fetched I know - but I have seen worse than this! Marjorie |
