I am new to all this & last night I subscribed to ancestry.co.uk. I am looking for my nan's family who were from York c1910 onwards. I have been unable to find any of them & was just wondering if there is a list of what info is available on there? Could it be that they don't have the records for York for that time? Also when it says March qtr, does that mean Jan, Feb & March or March, Apr & May? I don't want to sound stupid but I am slightly confused! Thanks Dawn |

Dawn The records you are referring to are the civil registration ones. Since 1st July 1837 all births, marriages and deaths have to be registered. The registers are divided into quarters (jan/feb/mar, apr/may/jun, jul/aug/sep and oct/nov/dec). These are referred to as Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. THEY ARE NOT WHEN THE EVENT OCCURRED but when it was registered. Obviously a wedding is registered when it happens, but births can be registered up to 6 weeks after the event, so someone born in november or December might be registered in the March quarter of the following year. The reason you haven't found any of your family is that Ancestry take their civil reg details from Freebmd, which has only transcribed up to 1910. If you want civil reg after 1910 you need to look at the GRO indexes which are on microfiche in various libraries/archives, or on subscription on www*1837online*com - replace * with . nell |

Hello Dawn, March quarter means January, February and March. As to what is on ancestry, the latest census is 1901. Births marriages and deaths are from 1837 to 1983 though they are not complete. They are the same ones found on FreeBMD. |
