From the GRO Q3 1854 Birth Joseph Holden PRESTON 8c (or e) 476 Q3 1854 Birth Joseph Holden BLACKBURN 8c (or e)476 Is this the same man, or is incredible coincidence at work here? Opinions welcomed. Marjorie

Preston and Blackburn are districts there could be up to and more than 20 parishes per district. Do you know where he may have been born. If you click on the district and then here when it comes up you will get a list of parishes in that district. Irene

O dear, I thought Preston and Blackburn were their surnames - have I misunderstood? Di

I misread the distsric as surnames aswell so don't panic Could Joseph have been registered twice? Once where he was born and then ahain at home. If you know Joseph's parents names you could send for the certificate, omitting the district, and using his parents as a checking point it should still only be £7 online as you have the volume and page which is the most importent

Sorry folks I forgot to format the post, it looked alright when I sent it! Sadly, I do not know his parents names - well, his father ought to be James Holden, god alone knows who his mother was. There is a minute possibility that his mother's name was Holden, unmarried. I darent put too much qualifying info on my request to GRO in case I miss an unthought-of scenario. I have 19 possible births to wade through, so am trying to keep this a cheap option. Think I might try the local RO, Blackburn have always been very helpful and they may tell me for no money that these two are in fact duplicated entries - or not! Thanks everyone. Marjorie

Phan Yes, I thought it was an unlikely coincidence - however, I have learned the hard way not to assume ANYTHING with the Holdens! And the fact that two different areas are mentioned - Preston AND Blackburn - same area, but miles apart. Marjorie
