I have found that unless you know the year and the quarter of the birth etc of the person you are looking for, then you can waste an awful lot of credits, as it brings you up an index of names which you have to pay to view. I have subscribed to it but to be honest have not found it as useful as I thought it would be. Maybe I am not using it to its full advantage as I am quite new to this. |

ive subscribed as well and found i wasted so many credits and not even finding anything, will have to think hard about using it again but then it doesnt cover anything for scotland, and i only have a few english relatives to look for. and the 1861 census is not complete. |

1837 has BMD index pages from 1 july 1837 until Dec 31 1983, And the index for records 1984 until 2003 (2002 for deaths) they also have some of the 1861 census and oversea BMD indexes The site is free to register and search but to veiw the pages (or transcripts) will cost you. BMD index pages cost 1 credit, census transcrpts and pages cost 3 credits each. You can register and have a look to see if you think it will be useful to you. I have used it with varied success, if you have no idea of when an event happened don't bother looking thought as it will cost you alot. Currently 55 credits will cost you £5 (GBP) and last up to 45 days. if you can get a promotion code it will either give you extra credits or reduce the price. The more credits you buy the cheeper they are and the longer they last. |

Try familyrelatives(.)org instead. Between 1866 and 1920 you can search for a name and it will give you back intelligent search results with the matches (or no matches). You are more likely to find who you want using this method. A lot better than 1837 who just stuck all the BMD images with no intelligent way to search them. And 1861 on 1837online is numbered, after ancestry posted the full 1861 census on its website. Looks like 1837 is out of a job. Steve |

Derek, Try a combination of all advice. Try Free BMD first, if no luck try Familyrelatives, and last but not least check the fiche at your local library. And of course don't count out Ancestry (of which I have full membership) Steve |
