Hi All My husband's great grandfather was called Frank Pickup, b1853 in Garforth to Francis Pickup and Ann Barker (info from birth cert). When I sent for the wedding cert of the parents, her maiden name shows as Parker. In census returns, Ann was born c1822 in Ferrensby, Yorkshire, and from the wedding cert her father was James. Which surname is more likely to be correct? I'm having no joy in tracking her down. Any suggestions? Pauline

Pauline, What is father James surname down as on wedding cert? It could mean she was married before? I had a similar anomily. I got a birth certificate which said that mother was Mary Ann Tate formery Jackson. Had heck of a job finding marriage of a Tate to a Jackson. Eventually I found it and it was Mary ann Clark of the wedding cert, but she was referred to as widow. Any help? Glynis

Pauline Just looked again at your thread Parker/Barker a bit similar. Do you think its a spelling mistake on one or the other and dont know which one? But then fathers name on marriage cert should be one or the other shouldnt it? Glynia

Hi Glynis He is down as Parker as well, and she shows as spinster, so not married before. I just think that Barker and Parker sound so alike that one of the registrars got it wrong. Doesn't help me though :-(

Does Frank have any siblings? Might be worth getting one of their certs to see how the maiden name is interpreted

I'd go for Barker. Just did a search for any Parkers born in Ferrensby on all the Ancestry censuses and there wasn't one. Several Barkers though. Crista
