Before the welfare state, people in need applied for support to the parish. In the case of an illegitimate child, the parish in turn would question a mother to find out who the father of her child was. You may find details of an 'examination' or interview with the mother. BUT she may have been supported by a man and therefore not applied to the parish for help. This is what someone told me bastardy bonds were. Does anyone know where i can find them? From stephanie. |

Steph As I said in my original posting - if they exist, they will be in the county records office of whichever county the relevant parish was in. nell |

The records would be held at the nearest archives office to where she was born Lou |

Steph The records office you need will be the one relating to the parish in which the illegitimate child was born - not necessarily the one nearest you. But if this child was born in Lancashire, yes Liverpool sounds right. They should have a website with an idea of what info they hold, but often in records offices its a case of going in and having a rummage. The documents are often with the 'parish chest' (originally a big box with all the parishes' business in it. nell |

Steph If I have read your other thread correctly, you are looking for records round about 1905? If thats correct, then Bastardy Bonds had long since finished. What you need to look for are Filiation Orders which were more commonly called Maintenance Orders. These were usually handled by the Magistrates Courts by 1905 and any records which survive will be in the County Records Office of the County where the child was born. Good luck Marjorie |
