I am really struggling with a workhouse birth and what really happened. I always thought that when women went into the workhouse pregnant they stayed in there with the child. minnie was born in the workhouse but was in there on her own at age 8. i know her mother could of died , but i cant find any record of her death. would it be normal practice in the 1880's to leave your child in there?? i have read up on workhouses but havn't found anything really about mothers and children.

She may not have left her in the workhouse after the birth. It may just be coincidence that she is back in the workhouse aged 8 for her to be located there on the census. If the mother was a single parent, she would have needed to work to support the child. If work could not be found locally, she may have needed to travel to find employment and the child had re-entered the workhouse temporarily if it wasn't feasible for her to take her daughter with her and she had no-one else she could entrust the child to. Just an idea!

Beth, If you can find out which record office has the admissions register for the workhouse, you'll be able to see when they came and went. Janice
