Pat I already am doing a sort of one name study of HOLDEN - I find it impossible to pass by any reference whatsoever without making a note of it. Consequently I have some 5000 records of Holdens, from 1179 to the present day. BUT NONE OF THEM ARE MINE!!!!!!!!!!! Marjorie |

Jeannie, I forgot to add that once you start chasing one surname , the research into your own immediate family tree tends to fall by the wayside. http://www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.php will give you a rough idea of the number of persons of one particular name that are alive and kicking in the UK. dave |

Thanks for the helpful info, Dave. Just to show how unknowledgable I am, how do you know how many Brewertons are alive today? If I start this it will be from the bottom up. My real concern is that my first William Brewerton 1765 was really Brereton which is a small village close by, since I can not find his birth or marriage. I have his d.o.b. from death record. So maybe I should take that as a starting point but then I would be doing my tree. Hmmm I think I am talking myself out of this!! |

Hi Jeannie I started my One Name Study, and joined the Guild about four years ago. My first step was to extract all the references to the name from the BMD fiches at my local reference library, took about a year of occasional visits. In the mean time I extracted all the IGI references and took a few months sorting the wheat from the chaff. (lot of chaff in the IGI) In the time between BMD and IGI, I Googled on the surname and recorded all the web stuff. Then the censuses. Then the worldwide phone books. I took a few breaks between times to prevent an immediate divorce, some spouse/partners do not seem to have any idea of the importance of this hobby. All the data I gathered I entered on cards and copied to MS Excel and later to a web home page http://homepage.ntlworld(.)com/kinship/ My surname EATLY/EATLEY is quite rare, there have always been no more than about 30/40 persons of that name alive worldwide at any one time: BREWERTON has between 600/700 persons of that name alive in the UK alone today, so you have a lot of work ahead but it is fascinating. Good luck dave |

Hi Pat, hope your keeping well, and Ann, Yes it was the Guild people that I spoke to. Dont feel that I have the knowledge or ability to be a member of that guild since they do present day stuff as well. Brewerton being quite rare, I keep seeing patterns from census etc. The trouble is that you have to be systematic and thats something my worst enemies would not accuse me of!! Thought it would be fun to start gathering data so have printed off the 1861, 71 and 1901 census. Now having a what should I do now moment!! |

Presume you know there is a Guild of One Name Studies website (GOONS). I think if you do it officially there are a few rules to follow. Of course there's nothing at all to stop you just doing it for your own interest! I would have thought that most good Family History programs would be able to cope with it. They are designed to hold many thousands of records. I am a member of an official one name study society. They are extremely helpful. For example they have produced fully searchable floppies with all the BMDs for that name extracted from the GRO. They have also added to that database with other known facts to tie people together. Hiya Jeanie, I don't envy you that task, but I wish you luck with it. Brewerton not being a common name should be easier than some of mine or is that the reason you are doing it? I shall keep a look out for them in Staffs for you ;-) I would love to ask Marjorie if she would fancy doing one name study for Holden? now there is a challenge. LOL. She also might be able to give you some tips. Good luck. Pat x |

Having visited the FH fair in London on Saturday, couldn't find anyone from GR!!, I have become interested in carrying out a one named study on the name BREWERTON. Inspite of speaking to a couple of very pleasant chaps, hello to Peter who comes on here, I am still a bit mystified as how to go about it. I have the leaflet and understand the basics. However, would I have to collect peoples trees? Which program would cope with this sort of info? Any advice gratefully received. |
