On the 1901 Census Wakefield (Ancestry) I have a Charles Burroughs living in Sharlston....... He origionated from Wiltshire.....for his wife it just gives her initials M A.......and for the rest of his family (except for one son) it gives just initials........why??.......Could it be that the enumerator couldn't understand a southern accent??........One of the kids from this family should be my great granny Rose and there is a child with the initial R....is there anywhere else I can check out this family??...........Sue

Don't suppose they were married in 1891 were they?

Sue I have a census entry where all the children are listed by initials only, on the 1891. Maddening! You should be able to find the wife's name from the couples' marriage cert and then find suitable children of the right age with the right surname in the births indexes. nell

It could just be that either whoever filled in the form or the enumerator couldn't be bothered to write the names out in full. There wouldn't be anywhere else you could check the family's details for 1901 that would have their full names; you would have to do other checking such as birth and marriage registrations, 1891 census if the children were born in / before 1891, er... can't think of much else offhand.
