My great grandmother's father on their marriage cert. is just listed as a Gentleman! On the census it describes him as own something (can't read the second word). I assume that this means he had enough money not to work?? Anyone know please. Sally |

Hi Sally, That's exactly it. Sometimes it was an annuity they lived on or perhaps rent from land or houses. Gwynne |

Thanks Gwynne - I just wanted to be sure before recording it, just in case it meant something more dubious!!! Sally |

Hi Janice, no, it's a longer word than that. I just can't make it out. Sally |

Could the word have been annuitant? My Robert was a Gentleman and annuitant (but certainly not gentry) Gwynne |

I will have to go back and have another look, but I don't think it began with an A Gwynne. My father's line were certainly sort of high up in the feeding chain, but don't know about aristocratic. Funny really, because my mother's side were very much at the other end! One wonders how the two families got together!! Sally |

Sally - could it be 'own account' or 'own means'? Regards Cherie |
