Hi Can anyone throw some light on these birthplaces on the 1861 census for Northumberland please...Westcht, Northumberland...and... Mastle St Johns, Northumberland...I've had a look at the image and it does seem to be what's written? many thanks, Sylvia |

Perhaps they're districts of Newcastle and not villages to the north? Westcht sounds like an abbreviation. What does it say on the page where the enumeration district is described? I have just looked on Ancestry but can't find anything similar. What piece, folio and page are you looking at? |

for Mastle read NCastle so Newcastle, St John's the other one might be West Chirton? Beth :) If they occur together it may be Westgate (again in Newcastle) |

Hmmm just worked out that Mastle could be Nastle ...another way of putting Newcastle. Could Westcht be Westchurch? Is there such a place? The Parish is Westgate but it definately doesn't say that. |

Thanks folks. This man (William Newton) has got me totally confused. On the 1851 he's born Newcastle On the 1861 he's (possibly) born West Churton, Northumberland On the 1871 he's born Westoe, Durham All these about 1793-5 which is making it very difficult to find his parents. Sylvia |

Yep, just found him. Certainly is Newcastle, St John's. Not sure yet about Westcht! You could try on the NDFHS site. |

I think the Westcht is actually Westoe but spelt Westoh and written badly. Northumberland is a mistake and should have been Durham. |
