Hi Kathleen, I wrote to East Lothian about my husband's g.grandfather and they turned up Parish Records for him, his parents marriage and extracts from the newspapers concerning his pub. All for 3pound. Have you tried the local authority and yeap, I guess they'll be closed for the hol. Cheers Kristeen

thanks christine, im hoping to get to the gro in edinburgh this week, have had a stinker of a cold all week, do you know if the gro is closed for the bank holiday? kate

Hi Kathleen, no there were no birth certificates as such in Scotland before compulsory registration started in 1855. Before then it would be more likely to find the OPR baptism entry rather than the birth. These were for the Church of Scotland register for births and more often baptisms. Catholic records or those for other denominations might be found in the National Archives for Scotland There's unfortunately often not too much information on these entries. Ususally just the date of baptism, child and parent's names, parish of residence and sometimes fathers occupation. best wishes Christine
