I've found quite a lot of information about my great great grandfather's family but can't find anything about his work. According to family legend he was the Post Master General of Liverpool but I'm not sure when. On the 1901 census he's listed as Post Office Supervisor and he was 44 by then. I'm not even sure if he really was the post master general (my great grandfather was prone to lying. he swore blind we were descendents of rob roy and i've recently found out his family come from ireland anyway) If anybody has any info on where i could find out if he was the post master general and if he was; where i could get any information on him i would really appreciate it. To be honest i don't know where to start Thanks Sarah |

I've been to the Soc of Genealogists fair in London today, and there was a stand there with info for the Post Office Museum. Apparently it's inderneath Mount Pleasant sorting office in London and you can go there and search the records. They hold quite a bit. You might be lucky. Diane |

Sarah- have you looked for him on any other census returns. If you post his details here one of us will look for him. Got to go to bed now though! Will look in tomorrow to see if you've replied. Simone x |

To Diane, Thanks for that I think I might take a trip down there and see what I can find. Thanks for the info. To Simone, I've got him on the 1861/71/81/91 and 1901 censuses but only have his profession for 1881 ( Post Office Sorting Clerk (C S Mess) ) and 1901 which is the post office supervisor one. His name is Robert James Thompson and he was born in 1857 to Robert and Margaret Thompson both born in Ireland. He was born in liverpool though. I think if he did become Post Master General he must have done it after 1901 so maybe that's why I'm not turning up anything. Anyway any help at all will be appreciated Thanks Sarah |

Sarah A long shot I know but.....(ya gotta try!) My partners Father has his family tree going back to the dooms day book. Their family name is THOMPSON and live in Ireland. What part of Ireland was your Margaret and Robert from? Gerri x |

To Alan, Thanks for the advice. I've sent them an email for some information. Hopefully they'll be able to point me in the right direction! Thanks again Sarah To Gerri, I'm not sure where Robert and Margaret come from in Ireland. I only have them on the 1861 and 71 censuses and it just says Ireland. That's been one of my stumbling blocks. If it helps Robert was born in 1816 and Margaret was born in 1826/27 they must have emigrated before 1847 because their first child Andrew was born in liverpool in that year. If this matches up with any of your partners family please let me know. Thanks Sarah |
