Nell, thanks very much for that info. I now have an even more pressing reason to visit the Lewes RO. All holidays now revolve around record office locations. Yes, Barbara, most of my Sussex rellies lived long and uneventful ag lab sort of lives so it's quite exciting to find a prisoner! |

Not sure if they have the register as such, but this place has a lot of records relating to Lewes House of Correction: East Sussex Record Office The Maltings Castle Precincts Lewes BN7 1YT Opening hours Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8.45am – 4.45pm Wednesday 9.30am – 4.45pm Friday 8.45am – 4.15pm Saturdays – open on the second Saturday of each month from 9am – 1pm and 2pm – 4.45pm Commonly used documents (eg parish registers and maps) are held onsite but more unusual items may be held off-site and take about a week to order. To avoid disappointment, please tell us what you are looking for when you book your appointment. Booking an appointment Please book an appointment if you want to visit on a Saturday. On other days booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. Some records are held elsewhere or may not be immediately accessible for other reasons. Ness He's obviously been a naughty boy. Wherever the Sussex records office is, they should have the gaol registers. The register should have when he was committed, what for, a physical description, when he was sent to trial, the trial outcome etc etc. Gloucestershire Records Office has a searchable index for prisoners - when you've found the right person they will send a copy of the entry for a few £. |

Found my fourth great granduncle in the Lewes Gaol and House of Correction in 1861...aged 75. Does anyone know if there is anywhere one can find out more about this? |
