Oh no - I'm Irish! Can I carry on?

I've just discovered that instead of being part Scottish as I had assumed because my g.g.g.grandparents were called McLean, they were both in actual fact Irish. I have been reading past threads but the more I have read, and the more sites I have visited, the more confused I have become. I thought I might employ genfindit to help me out but I'm not sure whether I have enough info and they will only refund 75% of the cost if you don't give them all the info they need. All I know is that Donald McLean married Elizabeth Kavanagh. They were both born in Ireland (don't know where exactly). They had their first child (the first that I'm aware of anyway) in 1846 in London but I cannot find a marriage for them in England - I've tried Ancestry, Pallot's, IGI and FreeBMD. So, I have no date and no place - can anyone suggest my next move? Thanks Cherie

I have found out that my husband's family are from County Antrim and his family are very proud Scottish Catholics that support Celtic. They hate the Irish and wanted to disown me for being English. I love family trees - lol! Pippa

Sorry - should I have called you Helen? I must have only remembered the last bit!

Pippa, I bet that went down well! I'm quite disappointed not to be Scottish as I had visions of researching the family tartan. Never mind, I'll just have to get into Guinness & riverdance now. Cherie

Cherie I answer to Helen or Nell, don't worry :-) very smug as all my ancestors back to the 1700s are English and all of them apart from Cornwall in an easy day's journey to the relevant records office. nell

Joy I'd love the websites if it's not too much trouble. No I cannot find the births of any of their children which I also think is odd as according to the 1861 census they were all born in London. The eldest child on the census was Elizabeth born c1846 St Luke's. I am descended from her brother William born c1849 in Shoreditch but I can't find his birth either. I've tried 1837online, FreeBMD, Ancestry, IGI. Thanks, Cherie Helen I'm sure being smug gives you wrinkles!! Well, I've got to get my own back somehow! Cherie

Fantastic - thanks Joy. I've got loads to work on now. I know what you mean about seeing the signatures. I feel the same looking at the census images even though all the pages are written by the officials just seeing my ancestors names written down like that makes them come alive to me. I just wish the pages could talk sometimes! Thanks again. Cherie
