Any one know of any sites that list details of actors in early 1900's? Also, any one know whether changes of surname ahd to be registered anywhere between around 1890 and 1908? My great grandfather was an actor, and I'm having a hard time tracing his birth/marriage. family legend has always had it that the family name Lyndon was his adopted stage name! Do I have a chance of unravelling this story? Debbie

Debbie I'm having a similar problem with husband's gt uncle Edward G Merry (real name Carter), who apparently acted and was manager of the Penge Theatre. No trace. nell

Hi Debbie I had the same problem with one of my rellies, by luck i found him on A2A. turns out i had his real name all the long but hadn't conected the 2 together. You could try getting hold of a copy of Whos Who in the theatre (Pitman 1912 - 1977), also the Green Room Book (1906 - 1909) or you could try emailing the Theatre museum London. Sorry i can't find their web or email addy Julie

These are a couple of useful sites: http://www.backstage.ac.uk/ http://members.tripod.(com)/FootlightNotes/ just remove the brackets I have 3 generations of actors/actresses and stage names were used commonly - as far as I have found they did not need to register a change of name, they just called themselves what they liked on stage! My great-grandmother used her own grandmother's maiden surname as her stage name - that may just be the way she did it, but its an angle worth looking at. Sarah
