On the 1861 census have found gx4 grandparents, wife is with one daughter and family but the husband is with 3 other children and 3 grandchildren ages 9 to 5 on a page on their own with a heading List of persons not in houses. If the count was at night which they say it was why were they not in a house? Any thoughts Sue |

Are they on the page following on from the wife and daughter? If so the ennumerator could have put his heading in the wrong place. It seems a lot of people and specially children to be 'not in a house'. Does it say where they were? (eg. hut; tent; under hedge; in barn) Perhaps they were having a jolly night out camping with Grandad!!! Anne |

They are in different villages, wife is visiting daughter and husband I think because they have a 3 wk old baby. I have had another look at the census images and they are in a shed, the adults seem to be in work as coopers and married Maybe they were just working late! Sue |

Yes, I think you have it there. Perhaps they had an order to complete and were working overnight. The younger children could have been with them to keep out of the way of the new baby. Anne |
