Im at difference stages with my tree. Maternal side: one branch goes back to my Grandfather just found his parents names awaiting the marriage cert to show ages.. other branch can get back to 1860 to my GT Gt grandparents awaiting certs Paternal side one branch stops at my grandfather just found his parents names still loooking for the marriage details. other branch *with help* gone back to 1760 on my grandmothers side but i would like to look into the partners and their families more. Didnt know where to start or how useful the BIVR were or the info they hold. or Whether it would be worth looking at getting the census for a particular area ?? I am unable to use the census stuff on Ancestry as i dont have a C/C to pay for subscription. But i have got credits on 1837online. Any other idea's ??

Hi Amanda You don't say what timescales you are looking at but 1841 or 1851 CD's are usually best to buy in my opinion. 1841 just gives name, age (rounded up/down to nearest 5), status and occupation. 1851 has name, age, relationship to head, marital status, occupation, where they were born (provided your relatives tell the truth!) 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census can all be access via Ancestry (a subscripion doesn't cost much more than some of the county CD sets). BMD can usually be accessed for free on Ancestry or FreeBMD or some of the county sites for pre 1910 and after this you can pay to use familyrelatives or 1837online. Beware though, 1841 and 1851 are very difficult to read and completely illegible in places - I was disappointed to discover that the tiny village I was most interest in was unreadable and I know my rellies are there but I can't see them! If you as far back as pre1837, you can but some parish records on CD but I don;t know what info they hold. Sam

I need a little advice.... I am considering buying some of the many cd's available but obviously want the best value for money. So far my relations have either been around London area on maternal side or Norfolk areas on paternal. the sort of info i would be interested in is any of the BMD census or even what type of occupation they had. However saying all this dont know what other information i can get... so any help what CD's do u suggest and what kind of info do they provide? Is there somewhere specific to buy they without gettting ripped off? Thanks Amanda
