Hello Madlee inluv Could she have been in service? Two of my McMeeking grandfather’s sisters from Crossmichael died in service. Isabella McMichan died in Wemyss Castle (where family lore said she was a lady's maid but her death cert. from 1862 aged 25 said she was a kitchen maid!!) Elizabeth McMicham (‘Domestic servant’) died in 1867 aged 26 in Cheltenham so your Catherine Anderson could be anywhere! They obviously worked their young servants to death! In those days there was often a very thin dividing line between families whose daughters were domestic servants (one of the few jobs for women) and those who employed them. Grandfather’s third sister (who lived to 80!) is shown as housekeeper for her brother in Nottingham on the 1891 census but as soon as he married he and his wife themselves employed a servant! Good hunting - Liz

thanks for that elizabeth. only thing driving me mad is i have her death cert which states she died of tb in the place she was born, saline fife in 1890. you are right, she couldve been anywhere but as a mysterious grandaughter turns up on the 1891 scotland census age 9 and born in england with catherines mother and brother. i thought possibly catherine may have been in england and had the child without being married. is there any way someone could be missed on the census? leanne x

There are quite a few Catherine Andersons born in Scotland who were working as servants in England - including one at Windsor Castle. Have you had a look at those? Perhaps she came down to work in England for a while and then went back to Scotland later?

I wonder if this could be Catherine, census says born Dunfermline, but according to 'genuki' 'Saline parish is on the western boundary of the county. It is bordered by Clackmannanshire, Culross, Torryburn, Kinross-shire, Dunfermline and Carnock Dwelling: 48 Dallfield Walk Census Place: Dundee, Forfar, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203483 GRO Ref Volume 282-3 EnumDist 15 Page 28 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Catherine ANDERSON U 19 F Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Power Loom Weaver Ann CHALMERS U 25 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland Rel: Lodger Occ: Power Loom Weaver Liz
