PS - this might be the Emily aged 10 on 1871 and 1 on 1861.... still doesn't explain. I found a birth for Emily Jane Corby ages ago on a visit to the FRC, have had the cert for years. So perhaps she is Jane on the censuses, and then Emily when she married???? |

Thanks guys. Re tracking Jane Emily Corby.... I've found that marriage, but that is all. I can't even find her on the 1881 before she married (dec qtr 1881). If anyone would like to use another set of eyes, feel free, it would really be appreciated. Emily Jane Bessant nee Corby, my gg grandmother, is down in the family bible as Emily Jane, and on the certs of her children. You are right in thinking that my confusion lies in which one is my ancestor?? The Emily or the Jane on the 1861 and 1871. I've looked on the cityark site and I can't seem to find their baptisms either. It would make sense to assume my ancestor is Emily on the censuses, born in June 1858, BUT the ages on the censuses suggest that she is the Jane on the 1861 and 1871. Am I making more sense? Will list the two censuses details: 1861 - Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent Joseph Corby, head of family servant, M, 31, Servant to the Establishment, Kent Chatham Jane Corby, wife, M, 26, , ditto George Corby, son, 6, scholar, Kent Old Brompton Joseph Corby, son, 4, scholar, ditto Jane Corby, daughter, 2, scholar, ditto Emily Corby, daughther, 1, , ditoo 1871 - Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent Joseph Corby, head of family, M, 40, Officer's servant domestic, Kent Chatham Jane Corby, wife, M, 34, ditto, ditto Joseph Corby, son, 14, Scholar, Kent Gillingham Jane Corby, dau, 12, ditto, ditto Emily Corby, dau, 10, ditto, ditto Henry Corby, son, 9, ditto, ditto Arthur Corby, son, 5, ditto, ditto Louisa Corby, dau, 3, ditto, ditto |

It still goes on today..... I chose Anthony for my sons name and registered him as Colin Anthony...........never a problem with him being known as Anthony until he went to school.. the teachers always used the first name ...later in life he went to college then univesity and I have recently discovered that I am one of the few people who call him Tony...............I was rather surprised when I discovered that he uses Colin as is first name................all those years of confusion resolved.............but if I had to write his name in the family bible then nearly everyone he knows would not know why his father got his name wrong |

Can you track Jane Emily forward in census and note her age so that you can be certain that you have 'married off' the right sister to the right partner? My great great grandmother was registered Sylvie. By baptism she was Sylvia Jane and spent most of her life being logged as Jane on various documents. Goodness only knows why they give children similar names. We have a Samuel William and William Samuel in one family. I thought they must be the same person until I found the 2 brothers together in a census. I think you are on the right track already, but I understand your confusion! |

Hi Chloe Perhaps they put her names on the wrong way round on her death cert? It could be a genuine mistake? I would stick with what it says on her birth cert. Perhaps she prefered aher name the other way round later on in life? Or, perhaps she always got called jane anyway and her daughter just registered her name on her death cert because of that? I see what you mean, that censuses arent always accurate, and there could be trillions of reasons why William Coombs was put down as William Bradford on 1841 Why did Sarah die just 6 weeks before the 1851 census. Couldnt she of waited and had her stroke just after so then I could of got her birthplace, as it says 'n' on 1841, not born in London. Ben |

Thanks Jess. Annoying people that they are! I can't for the life of me find the baptisms of her parents, Joseph CORBY and Jane SWAIL. Both give place of birth as Chatham, but can't find them there. Grrrrr! PS - her sister Jane Emily was a witness as was her cousin William George Corby. |

On her marriage cert in 1881 she is Emily Jane CORBY, daughter of Joseph CORBY. She gives her age on January 9th 1881 (marriage) as 24. She and her husband are on the 1881 census, Emily J Bessant aged 23. I have a birth certificate - Emily Jane CORBY born 1 June 1858 at Brompton Barracks. On the 1861 she and her family are there. There are two girls, I get confused with them! Her sister was Jane Emily Corby. No birth on FreeBMD, but there is this marriage - Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1881 --------------------------------------- CORBY Jane Emily Medway 2a 901 GAFTON Ernest Alfred Medway 2a 901 SMITH Susan Holmes Medway 2a 901 White William Medway 2a 901 However, on the censuses there is a Jane Corby, aged 2 on 1861 and 12 on 1871. And Emily Corby aged 1 on 1861 and 10 on 1871. The thing that confuses me is Emily Jane's death certificate. I have her death date written in a family bible so I know it's her. She is down as Jane Emily Bessant on the death cert 10th Jan 1932. Age is 74, fits with birth year of 1858. Her youngest daughter, Kathleen, registered her death. Why change your name to Jane Emily when you were born Emily Jane and gave your name as Emily on the censuses?? Or have I got her confused with her sister, Jane Emily?? |
