Cant find g grandmothers birth on 1837online. Problem is that there are 2 with the same name and age on the 1871 census. I have one cert but its the wrong one. I have tried IGI (nothing there) and the local bmd only has marriages at the moment.

I've used a number of site- including 'familysearch.org' it's the mormon website and has lots of information on it. I also got a good book from WHSmiths called Tracing your family history published by Collins. It give ideas and sugested places to visit including the family records office & NA in London. Hope this has helped. Keep us posted on your progress.

The name is Annie Ellis born 1860 or 1861 Marston Wiltshire. On the 1871 and 1881 census there are 2 Annie Ellis, one born Marston and one born Devizes around the same time period. The one I have the cert for is Annie Elizabeth Ellis, father George Hackett Ellis and mother Hester Hendon Stockewll but this is the wrong one. Marriage certificate gives her fathers name as George Ellis, but on the censuses Annie is never with her parents, but down as visitor, though she could possibly be niece or cousin to the head of household going by later censuses.

Could Annie be her middle name? On Ancestry there are these three births:- Elizabeth Ann Ellis, Sept. qtr. 1860, Devizes, 5a, 61 Mary Ann Ellis, Dec. qtr, 1860, Devizes, 5a, 78 Mary Ann Ellis, Dec. qtr, 1860, Devizes, 5a, 82. Kath. x

I thought of that and got the cert for Elizabeth Ann Ellis, but there is no father named. Not really anything to go by I know, as sometimes a fathers name is entered on marriage certs even when there isnt one. I really need the 1861 Wiltshire census for Marston. Unfortunately it is not available yet on CD. Maybe my local LDS will have it.

There is the horrid possibility that her birth wasn't registered. While rarer by 1860, it did happen quite a lot. 1851 Wiltshire is surname indexed. Have you tried to find the various Georges to see where they all are? Have you tried looking at the 1861 census, to see where the George Ellises were? Baptisms start to get difficult after 1837, but you could try looking for Annie in the parish registers. Good luck.

I do have an index for 1851, I will definately look at that. The LDS dont seem to have the 1861, so it looks like a trek to the Wiltshire Records Office. Thank you all for your replies.

Found this one on 1837online. Is it the one you've already sent for, or a different one? Annie Elizabeth, Mar. qtr, 1861 Devizes, 5a, page 100 Kath. x
