I quite agree. I found a family of rellies on the 1881 census yesterday who I had been looking for for ages and was convinced they weren't on there. Surname was Bistow instead of Bristow, Sarah Ann(ie) was Anne, Isabella Minnie was Minnie, Sydney Wylie was Sid. W. and Florence Margaret was Flor. I was so chuffed to find them at last! Kate.

What a lovely story. Im having problems with my relations changing first names and trying to throw me off the scent! Maybe it was because so many of them had the same name they used second names, but like you I wont give up, it just makes me more determined to track them down Carole

Hi Jackie - good for you, I have several 'dead ends' on my tree. If I hit one, I tend to go and work on another line for a couple of weeks and then come back to it. It's amazing what you can find when you stop looking for a bit. Trudy

A few months ago I was looking for the first marriage of my Great Grandfather David Walshaw. I even asked for any ideas on the message boards here as I was totally stumped. I went through the GRO index twice - I bought every certificate for anyone of that name in West Yorkshire - none of them were him. I was fed up - maybe he didn't register the marriage I thought. I then decided to work backwards I knew his first wife was called Jane but was not sure of her last name, but we'd always though it might be Scott. There were two marriages in Halifax for a Jane Scott - one of which to a David Walsh - he had been entered of the index under Walsh!! There is no way I would have found that had I not had a rough idea of her maiden name. I am really pleased now I know her father's name - as we have his clock, I know which house it lived in before Gt Grandad got it! Jacquie
