If someone (John Forsyth) is listed on 1850 New York census born in Scotland c. 1809, eldest child born 1843 New York -it follows (obviously) that they emigrated between 1809 & 1843. Is there a source of names of emigrants/immigrants? Is Liverpool the most likely point of departure? I can't find any of the family on a later US census & I know his widow & 1 son came back to UK before 1871. Can anyone help any further please as I am up against a brick wall. many thanks Jenny

Thanks Sarah. At least it tells me that he could have gone from Glasgow. His wife was from Ireland & I thought he might have met her on the boat perhaps, but more likely they met over in US. I shall continue to search. Jenny

Hi Jenny, Found lots of John Forsyth's on the immigration records arriving between 1809 and 1843 but many only show year of arrival with no ages or place of origin. Those that do have ages don't match up with John's approx date of birth. I may have found them on the 1860 (assuming I found the right family on the 1850) however, some of the data doesn't match up with the 1850 (but that's nothing new). John Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 63 1796 Scotland Male Anny Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 45 1814 Scotland Female Anny Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 16 1843 New York Female John Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 13 1846 New York Male Ellen Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 11 1848 New York Female Catherine Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 5 1854 New York Female James Forsyth New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, NY 3 1856 New York Male On the 1850 John's occupation is Architect on the 1860 he's a stone cutter. Wife Ann and children Ann and John ages match up but not Ann's (wife) place of birth. Margaret and George are missing but there is a George Forsythe, age 11 born in NY living with the Longstreet family in Howell, NJ. Possibly working on their farm. Shows both his parents born in Ireland. No sign of Margaret. Let me know if you would be interested in the 1860 census image. Rose
