DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY FREE SITES I CAN USE FOR MY FAMILY TREE AS THIS IS GETTING EXPENSIVE SIGNING UP FOR DIFFERENT SITES AND GETTING NOWHERE |

not sure where u r but if your family are from Kingston surrey the university has a brilliant site which is free. Also try freeBMD (births marriages and deaths) and freeCEN (census) theyre a bit slow and temparemental but worth a shot! |

Quite agree there is lots of free information available. I worked on for many years before signing up for ancestry - though I have bought a lot of CD-ROMs. I would suggest starting with GENUKI, lots of information there and it will be lead to more information on other sites. You can usually find a lot on the IGI on the LDS website but beware of any member's submissions as these are notoriously unreliable. You can find lots on FreeBMD but it can be slow - I think non-subscribers can get access to this information on ancestry.co.uk and it is much quicker. Many areas of the country are covered by UKBMD Look at mailing lists and message boards for your surnames and the area that interests you. Most have searchable archives of old messages. Sign up to any that you find particularly relevant. Have a look at the Family History Societies covering the area of interest. Most have websites which sometimes have some information and also will usually have a list of publications for sale. You can purchase some very useful items for quite reasonable prices. There might be things like MI on fiche but don't worry if you do not have a fiche reader, just take down to your local library and ask if you use their fiche reader. It is always worth a search on national records like PROCAT and A2A, occasionally you find something relevant. What I always suggest is doing lots of searches on the Web, any search engine will do.
