hi Again Margaret Try: start/control panel/internet options Then look for Temporary Internet Files, and click on 'settings'. Check for newer versions should be on 'automatic'. Is it? Are you sure you are using the correct address? If so then here is the link to contact them (hope it works) http://www*scotlandspeople*gov*uk/index*php?area=content/site_help/contactus2_help Vikki xx

Hi, I am with BT.. Y a h o o and put in the addy through their search. I presumed that would take me there OK, I suppose it does but wont let me in even though I have registered with them. I have tried to look for a contact addy on their site but seem to be going round in ever decreasing circles!!! Margaret

Are you using internet explorer or are you using something else? When I've used Scotland's People in the past I couldn't get it to work with Opera. I also have AVG and Zone alarm.

Are you with AOL? If so go to live help as they are really good. Otherwise you could ask Judy from the states? Vikki xx

Hi Everyone, Thanks for your replies. I do not have to log in each time I come onto this site and all other sites I go onto. I have AVG7 Free version and also Zone Alarm and never had this problem before. I did try disabling ZA but still no luck. My Windows version is 6 so fairly up-to-date. I am wondering if Windows Security downloads recently have caused this little problem!! Regards, Margaret

Hi Margaret The only reason a site will tell you to disable your firewall is because they want to put something onto your hard drive. DONT DISABLE IT! Your firewall settings maybe set to block certain types of java script or certain types of cookies. you need to find out what internet explorer version you are using - most are using version 4 or 5. If you are using an older version it may not be allowing certain cookies thru. Vikki xx

DONT disable your firewall - you can probably instruct it for specific sites - click help or configure ... Also, it may be your browser itself restricting use of Cookies. When you login here do you get straight in or do you have to type in Id and Password ?

If that happened to me, I would be looking round for a different firewall. Surely there should be at least one that gives you the option of entering your known sites that you would like to override the firewall, in a similar way that you can block cookies except those from your own named sites. After all, you are supposed to be in charge and the computer and firewall should work for you, not the other way round.

Hi Margaret I think a good person to ask would be Sheila Wray - she's a mine of information on Scottish ancestors. I don't think she's online at the moment, but if you find another thread with her name on, you could click on it and mail her via GR. Good luck! Mandy :)

getting on to Scotlandspeople site without disabling my firewall protection. They tell me I haven't got cookies to access and suggest that I disable firewall. Not too sure about doing that. Any ideas please, would be most welcome, as I am just starting to research my scottish roots. Many thanks, Margaret
