What a wonderful family legend! I always believe there's no smoke without fire - although someone at sometime quite often fans the flames. I would imagine you'd be looking at a place in Barbados or Antigua - did you see the Moria Stewart episode of 'Who do you think you are?' Those islands seemed to be the most prominent. Although it could I s'pose have been Grenada - that has strong British background. Try looking around the British Library website for clues - I know some of their collections deal with the Empire. Also, have you any idea who in your ancestry was involved in this? If so, you might get some clues from the various censuses - if someone suddenly disappears from view, that could be them. Also, try googling for 'sugar plantations history' and see what happens - try various terms surrounding that and you might get lucky. Do let us know what happens - this is an interesting story! Meanwhile, good luck. Regs Jane |

Hi, It was unlikely to have been the Queen herself as the Royal family have very little power. The land may have been confiscated by the government for several reasons - like non-payment of taxes. Gwynne |
