hi, i am trying to find my grt grandfathers william rance family . i have him on the 1871 cen with his mother elizabeth(eliza)but i have 3 last names for her(she remarried and i dont know what his last name was) i know she remarried in 1869 (nottingham) to francis patchel or perkins or padgett. i know william has 2 brothers charles and henry and a sister called july?. but there i get stuck ,i don,t know his father name at all and i don't know where to go now. any ideas at all would be gratefully received ,thankyou

i have both of those but this is where i have got all the last names from. i have looked for williams birth but i can't find anything for nottingham and that's where it says he was born on the certs. thanks for all your help so far. i will keep looking

can you get a 1st husbands name from her 2nd marriage?

Claire theoretically under wifes name it will say: Elizabeth XXXX widow of (husbands name) formerly YYYYY XXXX being her married name and YYYYY beiing her maiden name its worth a try if you've not been able to find a birth ref. otherwise you could search 1837online which has the complete GRO for the birth you need which will definitely have the fathers name on it

I don't think the marriage certificate would name her first husband but it should say thet she's a widow and with luck have her father's name which would give you her maiden name. Heather

This would seem to be the reference for William's birth. The date matches up with his age on the 1871 census. Birth William Rance, Sept. qtr. 1863, Nottingham, 7b. 233 Kath. x

thanks that looks like him.i was on about the name of the step family so i could try to trace mums maiden name but now i've go this birth may not need it thanks
