Children were often involved in straw-plaiting, and indeed any other industrial/agricultural work. nell |

I have relatives near(ish) to Aylesbury and they were straw plaiters - as in hats. Christine |

Hmmm..I never considered the spelling. It is definately 'platter' on the census, which put me in mind of a meat platter. lol My platters lived in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Thanks for the suggestions. I bet because of the age of the workers, a strawer plaiter would be most sensible. :o) Claire xx |

I think a sheet metal worker would be a 'plater'. A Straw plaiter would plait straw (there's a surprise!) which was used in making straw hats. Yes, I guess kids could do it. |

Does anyone know what this might commonly be? I have 'googled' it but get lots of different answers ranging from sheet metal worker to strawer platter. My rellies were as young as 5 who claimed to have this occupation so I don't think sheet metal worker can be right! Claire xx |
