I'm guessing he may have lived with his Aunt because his parents had died? There are no Blaylock entries at all for Jarrow district until 1870s but these two deaths are in nearby Gateshead Deaths Sep 1858 Blaylock Thomas Gateshead 10a 294 Deaths Jun 1859 BLAYLOCK Mary Gateshead 10a 326 Unfortuately no ages at death were recorded on the indexes at this time. |

I'm just wondering whether Elizabeth couldn't have been his father's sister rather than his mother's? Could the 'B' initial of her son's middle name stand for Blaylock? Will investigate further...Kate. |

Talking of middle names, it looks as though Agnes's was Tinner and Robert's was Crookston. Do both those names come from Janet's side of the family or could one or other be a clue? Kate. |

Ann - firstly I got their middle names by looking up their births on FreeBMD. Sorry I didn't answer your question last night but I'd gone to bed by then! I couldn't find any John Cummins on FreeBMD with a middle initial B so couldn't really find out whether his middle name was Blaylock or something else. By the way the house or place was Laverick Hall, not Lavervick, and if you put 'Laverick Hall' in as your search on A2A (www.a2a.org.uk) several matches come up which you may or may not find useful. Kate. |

Ann - Spooky stuff, maybe the ghost scared your family away? IN 1886, William Brockie (the editor of the Shields Gazette between 1849 and 1852) wrote: 'There is a tradition that an old farmer was murdered many years ago, at Laverick Hall, near Scots House, on the road from Sunderland to Newcastle.' And Brockie was right. The road he mentions is now the A184, which runs through the Boldons. Travelling towards Newcastle, Scots House is on the left. After passing Boldon Fellgate farm and Pike's Hole farm on the right, the mysterious Laverick Hall looms into view. So what happened all those years ago? We do not know, except that the farmer was killed and that his ghost came back to haunt the place. An elderly maid who had worked at Laverick Hall for decades saw the old farmer regularly, as did everyone in his family. Googled 'Laverick Hall'. This is definately the same house as Pike's Hole is the next property listed on the 1871 Census. |
