I discovered a couple of box-folders at the Lincoln Archives on the Canwick Road cemeteries. It had maps of the various sections (A, B, C etc) and their numbering systems, also the monumental inscriptions were listed. There is a name index for each cemetery, giving the plot number, so it's quite easy to find things. NB There are the OLD and NEW cemeteries. |

Chris, thanks for this on Canwick Road - and the info on the library contact details. It makes things so much easier when there's a helpful person on the ground! I have the following detail from the Family History Online website: Alice Waite....buried at Lincoln, Canwick Road plot C2202. Died 8 Sep 1910. I hesitate to ask this - and you must feel free to say no for whatever reason - but I wonder if you might be able to get me a transcription of the tombstone if you have the time. Many thanks for the help already given! Kind regards, William |

Thanks to all of you - all this information is appreciated. Chris - if you were able to get a photo that would be great...I wonder if the houses are still the same ones or maybe they needed rebuilt after the war? Does anybody else know any more???...I'll see what the Lincolnshire Archives may know - thanks for the suggestion. Regards, William |

Pity! I was in Lincoln last week. I was born in Scorer St, just round the corner from Kirkby St. I would imagine that Kirkby St was where he lived rather than where he worked, as he was employed by someone else at that time it seems. As Chrissie says, it's possible that 10 Canwick Rd was demolished in the 1950s when they built a flyover. They keep a lot of Kellys Directories in Lincoln Archives. One of those should give a precise location of the shop in relation to the streets in the area. |

I would try the local archives/library or possibly the local trades association for any info. |

My gg-grandfather had a shoeshop in Lincoln called 'Joy To Walk' - after the initials of his name, John Thomas Waite. He appears in various directories as follows: 1901 Lincoln Directory: '2 Kirkby Street, Waite, J.T., bootmaker's manager' 1913 Lincoln Directory: '2 Kirkby Street, Waite, John T., boot-maker's manager' 1919 Lincoln Directory: '10 Canwick Road, Waite, John T., bootmaker and repairer' Does anybody know of this shop? - can I even hope for a photo???! Thanks! William PS I'm also posting this on the Records Office board. |
