Can anybody help with an old family photo that I have received today. It was taken at Gales Studio Portmouth and was around 1908. It shows a boy and girl sitting and a girl who is around 20 and a much older woman. I can identify the family members but am intrigued by the littlel girl. She is wearing a dark coloured woollen dress and it looks as if it has a waistcoat or over bodice in the same material. She has boots on and around her neck are two sets of beads. They are wrapped around her neck and tied up high and the white set looks as if a large white coloured cross is attached to it. The other set is a dark colour and something is hanging from it but I can't make it out. Can anybody work out the significance of the beads??

Could it be a Roman Catholic rosary. Put rosary in google then click search. Then click on the word images and you will get some pictures of a rosary which you can compare with what the girl is wearing.

I thought about rosary beads but the family were all Salvation Army members, so it looks unlikely. I've E.Mailed a man who has written a book about the Salvation Army members to see if perhaps there is some type of service which would either award the beads or they would be a sign of something. Message for Hilary. Hello, I'm still awaiting the family bible from Devon. It cost £7.50 post and packaging, so it sounds big and heavy!!!
