I only recently realised when trawling census images that a 'servant' doesnt always mean what we think of as a domestic servant but can just cover an 'employee' living in the house. e.g. I found a young chap (probably an apprentice) down as 'Butcher' then 'servant'. Just a thought - I imagined a lot of mine must be from Upstairs downstairs and now realise that isnt so!

Well I didn't know that! I would assume 'servant' was like a butler or a palour maid! :o) Claire xx

Hi I transcribe for freecen and quite often come across 'daughter' or 'son' at her/his home address but is also a general house servant. Im not sure if this means she/he is employed at home or somewhere else but, would assume its at home, as it is the relationship to the head. A thought for my own children springs to mind. I wonder..............nope - dont think my children would buy into that! lol Vikki xx
