I have a photograph that my cousin sent me a copy of so do not have the original. My cousin has just moved and all the photographs are now in her loft. She cannot get up in the loft because she is disabled. My problem is that if I had the original I could send it off to a site found on the net and have the photograph dated. I put a request on this board and some really kind people have given me details of sites for dating old photographs that I have searched but I have not been able to find any mens suits that look like the one my ancestor is wearing. My very old Uncle insists this photograph is my father and I believe it is my grandfather but how do I prove it. Help, help help because this is now bugging me and I need to find the answer. Irene

He has a three piece suit on. He has a waistcoat that is double breasted, ending at his waist. The waistcoat has folded back lapels (like a suit jacket). It is the waistcoat that I am having the difficulty with, the suit jacket looks very normal. He has a flower in his buttonhole which makes me think he is going to a wedding. He is the image of my son and my brother. Regards Irene

hi irene, this mode of waistecoat was in the mid 1850's and into 1860's and very low fronted ,but usually worn with a large tied bow tie,,not conventional tie,, if he is wearing a conventional tie, with rounded collar then from about late 1890's into 1900's winged collars were also worn;at this time: if the waist coat has pockets and small folded back lapels buttoning starts about armpit level then is also of this time 1890'1900.pockets on the common mans waistcoat came in about the mid to late 1890's as more could afford the pocketwatch;; by your description i'd say late 1890's so could be older than to be your father???there will also be no turnups on trousers;; hope this helps,>you never said if he had /holding hat?? kay;;

Thank you Kay that is really kind of you. I have emailed you the photograph so you can check the above information fits in with the photograph. I do not know if there is a sight where you can look at mens outfits from that period. I would be interested if you know of any. Many thanks Regards Irene

these are 2 good sites for identifying photos from clothing (www).ajmorris.(com)/roots/photo(.datep18.)htm) and (www).classy/image/com/dating remove brackets
