My mum was born in 1933,she had 2 sisters. Their parents didnt marry until 1964. Came as a shock I can tell you as they were brought up with very straight-laced morals! I thought it was funny but my poor mum was mortified at the time.

Hi Sandra, Well,I had to smile at your .statement as to you didnt know ' why' they had child out of wed lock, well I think we all know the answer to that one!!!,and dont suppose they had one by choice' I dont think money comes into it!!!. Why should you be 'shocked',dont be,, you may find some more 'yet',but think we all would be a bit jealous if you were the only one with an unblemished family,,..>hope you have luck, Kay,,

Thanks to all my replies. I shall take Kays' advise and contact the registry office directly. Keeping my fingers crossed as this particular search should eventually find their son who was killed at sea in WW1, but without confirmation of who the mother was I can hardly assume what I think to be the answer. Getting further confused, Thanks again girls Sandra

Sandra Not sure what difference age made. I think the Victorian 'shame' thing only really took off towards the end of the 19th century, and I also think there would be a different attitude in the town than in the country. Just as today people have different moral values - look at the fuss over Charles & Camilla's wedding - some people think it was OK, others think it wasn't. And the shame thing was really about not being married and having a husband. I am sure there were plenty of children born whose fathers were not the husbands of their mums. nell

Hi Kay I don't know why they had child before marrying, perhaps it could of been the cost of a wedding, although he had decent job and the rest of his siblings seem to have married before children came along. I thought the 'victorian morals' were heavy duty then, I thought the 'shame' of having children out of wedlock was frowned upon, don't know, maybe I've been misled. If he did marry who I thought he did, she was over 30 years old, would that have made a difference?? Sandra

Hi Heather Oh well, perhaps they did marry after the birth then. Like many before me I am having trouble finding anything close to a marriage for some of my rellies, so things aren't that much different today are they? Sandra

Oh yes Sandra, they did. My GGPx2 were together 17 years before they married and had 6 kids before then.

Thanks Kay. I have to add that when I saw the year of the marriage it struck me as strange as their child was born before 1893 (that is if it was their child!). Mind you did many marry after having children? Sandra

Hi Sandra, Apply to the Register Office in the district where the marriage took place explaining what has happen with GRO,but dont quote GRO REF Index as these do not apply in Register Offices, they go by Entry Number ; Give them as much information as you can of Bride and Groom;; Kay.

I applied for a marriage certificate and have received a reply that GRO cannot produce a certificate as an error was made when the indexes where compiled. Can anyone advise me where to go sand find my ancestor? The marriage was in 1893. Sandra
