I have one (yes one) Scottish relative. I have no idea how to trace him prior to his moving to England. By 1871 he was living in Charlton in Medlock, Lancs - but put place of birth Scotland - which is no use in confirming who he is as I've no idea where in Scotland he came from. Here's all I know of him John Henderson Johnstone (Henderson is his middle name and was his mother's maiden name I presume) Born 06/02/1849 Scotland Died 19/01/1877 Halifax West Yorkshire He married Elizabeth Steel and they had a daughter Georgina May Johnstone who died as an infant. Can't find a match on LDS for a baptism is there a searchable 1861 Scottish census yet? Any advice appreciated. Thanks Jacquie

Hi Jacquie Have you looked him up on scotlandspeople? If not, I could check for you if you know when he married and if it was in Scotland. Jill

Jacqueline - As you know the birth date and full name you should get him on Scotland's people even without knowing the area. Registration didn't start until 1855 and you can't view the images of parish records yet but you could get quite a bit of info even without the image if you are lucky. The images are due 'commencing 2005'. If the marriage was in Scotland then you will also get that and those images are available on line now. It's £6 for a set of 30 credits valid for 168 hours - which you always use up searching for info on his parents! Karen

Thank you all for your help. Jill ,he married his wife in England so I can get that throught the English records system. I'll give Scotland's people a go - thanks for the tip I've not tried that site before - I looked at it but you can't really browse it so I'd left it before. At least he had a middle name - aren't people with no middle names pains in the neck to trace? Fingers crossed I find something for him. Thanks again for all your help. Jacquie
