Coroners do not make assumptions - the reason there is an inquest is to establish the cause of death. Sometimes this is because it might be suicide or murder, but often its because someone's cause of death isn't obvious and they haven't been seen recently by a doctor. The coroners' report may not exist - they are routinely destroyed. But there will probably be a newspaper report in the local newspaper. I found one for my gt grandfather (he died on natural causes) in 1879, on microfilm in Islington Local History Centre. It was just a paragraph, with several other inquest reports. But it gave a bit of detail and also interestingly, a slightly different cause of death to the one on the death cert! nell

my grandmothers sister died in 1935 aged 17 her skirt caught on fire whilst she was cleaning. I found her death record in my local library and also found her inquest printed in the local newspaper on microfiche so it is very likely there will be something even if it is a short piece. Check the local rag of the area in the library first, that is probably your best bet.
